Reflective OMP On Information Systems

The most significant things I have learned from this session

  • The difference between data and information. While Data is a raw unorganized fact, Information is data that has been processed, organized or structured in its context so that it becomes meaningful.
  • Characteristically, a good information system will be such that its data is carefully processed and organized for specific purpose, accurate, meaningful, structured, relevant, presentable, clear and unambiguous and easily understood, able to create certainty and reduce uncertainty.
  • Information has value because it can affect behavior, decision as well as trigger the right response, action, quick and faster decision process and outcome
  • Information lifecycle begins at creation (Internally or externally),       existence (stored, used and maintained), and terminates either by archiving or destruction
  • Certain processes are needed to support information exchange activities which flows throughout the information lifecycle from creation, storage, usage, sharing and dissemination,  maintenance, archiving and destruction
  • Information as an academic discipline is incorporated into several fields of studies which includes Positivism, Interpretivism and the Critical IS approach
  • An information strategy will outline the scope, vision, purpose and objectives relating to the availability, use, access and quality of the information as well as detail the policies, and responsibilities for managing the information within a system/organization
  • Legislations exist to govern the use of information systems, protect data, intellectual properties, copyrights, data retention, data privacy as well secure information
  • The Business Process Model is a tool, not a performance outcome but focusses on improving the business for a value-added outcome. The two uses of business process models and the processes involved are Pragmatic and rigorous paradigms, for capturing and understanding processes, and analyzing of the process respectively
  • IS despite its several advantages has its challenges during organizational change especially when changing information systems and information technology within an organization

What question(s) remain uppermost in my mind ?

  • Are the IaaS, PaaS, SaaS components of Cloud computing?
  • Why has there not been a success in tackling hacking, theft of customer information despite all the legislations within the EU, USA, UK and other part of the world?
  • How long should data be kept before destruction, and should Data be destroyed at all, given that the data (information) of an Asset /Entity /Business organization or institution is supposed to outlive that entity?

What did I not understand ?

  • The concept of Pervasive / ubiquitous technology
  • Pragmatic process and rigorous paradigms in business process modelling
  • The Business Process Modelling Notation (BPMN) system is still not clear to me
